Nov. 13, 2002
Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) and Kristen Fryburg (Dayton, OH/Kettering Alter) were named to the Mid-American Conference academic all-MAC teams after both received all-MAC accolades for the third consecutive year.
Kremer earned all-MAC first-team honors with a fourth-place finish in a time of 17:37.70. Redshirt junior Fryburg finished ninth for the Red and White with a time of 18:02.90, which earned her second-team all-MAC.
Kremer and Fryburg are two of only five honorees to earn all-MAC honors and academic all-MAC honors during the 2002 season, as voted by the faculty athletic representatives at all 13 member institutions.
After winning the Miami Invitational to start the year for the RedHawks, Kremer had won five straight home races dating back over two years. Kremer earned MAC Women's Runner of the Week for the fourth time in her career and MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the third time after her first place performance at the Miami Invitational. Kremer placed second at the Miami Fall Classic, 11th at the Minnesota Invitational, sixth at the All-Ohio Championships and 24th at the Pre-Nationals. Kremer's time of 17:28.8 at the Miami Fall Classic was the fastest time by a RedHawk on Miami's course in RedHawk history and ninth fastest time all-time. Kremer became the second runner in Miami cross country history to earn all-American honors courtesy of her 25th place finish in the NCAA Championships last year. In both of her first two years at Miami, Kremer has garnered all-MAC and all-region honors in cross country.
The two-time first-team all-MAC runner, Fryburg, finished just behind teammate Kremer at the Miami Invitational and the Miami Fall Classic to earn second and third place, respectively. Fryburg's time of 18:02.1 was the 40th fastest time in Miami course history. After sitting out the All-Ohio Championships due to a leg injury, Fryburg finished the Minnesota Invitational in 33rd place and the Pre-Nationals in 78th place. Both finishes were second on the Miami team. During Fryburg's freshman year, she became the first freshman in MAC history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships by virtue of her 11th-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional Championships.
Kremer holds a 3.84 GPA in Mathematics while Fryburg has earned a 3.21 GPA in Sports Organization and Health Appraisal & Enhancement.
The honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
