OXFORD, Ohio - Track and Field and cross country may be two separate sports in the eyes of the NCAA but at Miami, head coach Rita Arndt-Molis has them working together even in October.
The women's track and field team held their monthly awards on Wednesday and passed out honors to the team's hardest works and top performers.
Kelsey McHugh earned the cross country athlete of the month award after leading the cross country team at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. McHugh finished in a time of 21:23.2, which is the fourth-fastest time by a Miami runner in school history on a 6-kilometer course. The meet was the final tune-up for the RedHawks before the Mid-American Conference
Other award winners were Alexia DeWitz and Alexis Lape. DeWitz was honored for her progress in the Javelin and Lape continues to make strides in sprints as well as horizontal jumps.
The women's cross country team will be back in action on Nov.1 when they travel Eastern Michigan University for the MAC Championships.
