Oct. 12, 2005
In their last tune up prior to the Mid-American Conference Championship, the Miami women's cross country team travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-NCAA Invitational on Oct. 15. The meet features 77 teams from the Big Ten, Pac-10,Ivy League, ACC and BIG EAST that will run in two separate races, and the RedHawks are one of only four MAC schools participating in the meet.
FOUR IN A ROW: Sophomore Jennie Stoll was the first Miami runner across the line at the All-Ohio meet on Oct. 7, the fourth-consecutive race that she was the top team finisher. At the 5K course in Delaware, Ohio, Stoll posted a fifth-place finish, clocking in at 18:28. Her top finish marked the seventh time in her career she was the top Miami finisher, and dating back to last season's Great Lakes Regional, Stoll has been the top Miami finisher in each of the last five races she has participated in--excluding the season opening Flyer 5K Challenge which she sat out because of an injury. During the 2004 season, Stoll was the top RedHawk runner on three occasions at the Cedarville Invitational, Pre-NCAA Invitational and Great Lakes Regional.
TRUE TO FORM: Two weeks after setting her personal-best time at the Cedarville Invitational (18:26), sophomore Sarah Henize continued her solid running at the All-Ohio as she posted a second-place team finish behind Stoll. The meet marked the fourth-consecutive race she was the second Miami runner across the line. The previous week at the Notre Dame Invitational against a talented field of nationally-ranked teams, Henize ran her second-best collegiate time as she clocked in at 18:37.
RELIABLE REDHAWKS: In each of the past four meets--the Miami Invitational, Cedarville Invitational, Notre Dame Invitational and All-Ohio Championship--the RedHawks top-four finishers have been identical. Stoll has been the first RedHawk across the finish line each time, while sophomore Sarah Henize has placed second on the team in each of the last four meets. Sophomore Carol Eckerly and senior Kristen Proach have finished either third or fourth on the team, with Proach being the third Miami runner across the line at the All-Ohio.
REMEMBER WHEN: Last season at the Pre-NCAA Invitational, the RedHawks finished 25th out of 36 teams as Jennie Stoll was the top Miami finisher in 58th place. Stoll and Carol Eckerly were the only two RedHawks to finish among the top 100 runners as Eckerly finished four places behind Stoll in 62nd place.
LAST WEEK AT THE ALL-OHIO: In the battle for Buckeye State supremacy, the Miami women's cross country team topped two schools from the Mid-American Conference-- Ohio University and Kent State--but came up short of winning their second team title in three years as they finished fifth at the All-Ohio Championships. The RedHawks finished four spots behind the first-place Akron Zips as only one runner, sophomore Jennie Stoll, finished among the top 20 runners on the 5K Course at Methodist Theological Seminary.
Stoll was the top Miami finisher for the fourth-consecutive race as she finished fifth, clocking in at 18:28. Fellow sophomore Sarah Henize was the second RedHawk across the line and the only other Miami runner in the top 25 as she posted a 21st-place finish with a time of 19:13.Behind Henize, senior Kristen Proach and sophomore Carol Eckerly finished 41st and 44th, respectively. Proach finished the course in 19:32 while Eckerly was four seconds off her pace, clocking in at 19:36. Senior Kelly Ardelean was the fifth Miami finisher as she posted a 61st-place finish (19:52).
FLASHBACK TO THE PRE-NCAA: Facing its best competition of the season at the 2004 Pre-NCAA Invitational, the Miami RedHawks finished 25th of 36 teams. The race included many of the largest schools from all over the nation, and in the White Race, Colorado topped the field with 94 points. Michigan finished second with 109 points and Arizona State accrued 187 points to round out the top three. Miami totaled 605 points as Jennie Stoll was the top Miami finisher in 58th place. Stoll finished the 6K course in 21:41.8, the first race of the season at that distance.
ARE THEY CLAIRVOYANT?: After finishing sixth in the conference last season, the RedHawks were the No. 5 team in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Kent State was tabbed as the preseason favorite. Miami has the ability to finish higher than fifth if their trio of talented sophomores, Carol Eckerly, Jennie Stoll and Sarah Henize can continue to improve in their second season and if Miami can get consistently higher finishes from its group of upperclassmen
2004 RECAP: In 2004, Miami finished sixth at the Mid-American Conference Championship as Carol Eckerly (seventh place) and Jennie Stoll (19th place) paced the RedHawks. Miami began its season by winning its first three meets--the Dayton Flyer Invitational, the Miami Invitational and the Cedarville Invitational--and a young RedHawks' squad that featured six freshman placed 12th at the Great Lakes Regional. Stoll was the top finisher (12th) at the regional meet while Eckerly was the only Miami runner to earn MAC honors (second-team) by virtue of her seventh-place finish at the conference meet.
