After winning its first two races, the Miami women's cross country squad continues its competition in Southwest Ohio this weekend at the Cedarville Invitational.

This Rookie's Something Else: Freshman Carol Eckerly finished first overall in the Miami Invitational last week after finishing second overall in the Dayton Invitational 5K. Eckerly led her teammates in bpth races, becoming the first freshman to lead Miami in a race since three-time all-American Andrea Kremer did so in 2000. Eckerly's time of 18:18 led teammate Jennie Stoll by 11 seconds.

Greenhorns Rule: Miami placed four true freshman among their scorers for the second-straight week in the Miami Invitational, though the lineup changed somewhat for the event. Behind true freshmen Carol Eckerly, Jennie Stoll and Tricia Frisella and first-year runner Kristen Proach was true freshman Sarah Henize. With Mia Fiegelist finishing seventh, Miami was again close to having a scoring lineup with five true freshmen.

Best in the Miami Valley: At the Sept. 4 Dayton Invitational, all five Division I cross country programs from Dayton to Cincinnati competed, giving Miami the chance to prove its dominance over its local rivals. The RedHawks finished ahead of Cincinnati, Dayton, Xavier and Wright State in their win.

Staying Nearby: Miami continues competition in Southwest Ohio next week at the Cedarville Invitational in Xenia, Ohio, about a dozen miles east of Dayton. Miami does not leave the state for competition until Oct. 16 for the Pre-NCAA Invitational in neighboring Indiana. Next week's race at Cedarville University is the last before a three-week break heading into the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

Meet Particulars: The Cedarville race, called the 14th Annual Friendship Invitational, takes place at 10 a.m. this Saturday at John Bryan State Park, about six miles north of the school's campus. The 5K course on which Miami will compete is described as traversing short hills, rough grass and pavement. The course is a regular host to Cedarville University's conference meet. Since its 2002 modification, the course record time is 18:08.

Welcome Home!: As her success continues, Carol Eckerly looks to make it three team-leading finishes in a row at the Cedarville Invite. The freshman is a native of Beavercreek, Ohio, a Dayton suburb and a short trip from the race site.

Let it Be a Surprise: Miami is the only MAC school scheduled to compete in the Cedarville Invitational this Saturday. Though it is one of only two meets to appear on MAC schools' calendars this weekend, nine MAC schools, including Akron, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan are slated to participate in the Central Collegiate Meet in Toledo, Ohio. That many MAC schools are not scheduled to get together again until the MAC Championship, also in Toledo, Oct. 30.

Big Running Shoes to Fill: Andrea Kremer, a three-time all-American, finished her Miami career in 2003-04, leaving a void to fill for this season. Kremer was the top Miami finisher in every race in which she competed last year. She finished sixth in a field of several hundred runners at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship last year, qualifying her individually for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 152nd. For her outstanding athletic and academic talents, Kremer was named Miami's Female Athlete of the Year three times in her four years.

Distances Through This Year's Races: The 5K course used for the Dayton Invitational will be the same length as all the invitational courses Miami will use this year as well as the MAC meet. The NCAA Pre-Invitational, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship will use a 6K course.

Who Knew?: Miami was chosen sixth in the MAC Preseason Poll released August 16. Toledo was chosen first, with Akron, Ball State, Toledo and Western Michigan and Kent State finishing ahead of Miami. The MAC announces only the top six finishers in the poll. Selectors undoubtedly wondered about the team's makeup this year after finishing fifth last season with Kremer in the lineup and taking so many untested freshmen into 2004.

Busy Weekend in the MAC: Miami was one of three MAC schools to host a meet this weekend as 12 conference schools suited up for competition. Also hosting meets on Sept. 11 were Akron and Bowling Green.
