OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University men's cross country team has been ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region, while the RedHawk women are ranked 14th by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as announced in today's pre-season poll.
The RedHawks, who finished 14th in the Great Lakes Regional Meet last fall, have hit the ground running, literally, in 2007.
In their first competition, the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge on September 1, the Miami runners finished first in a field of six teams with junior Pat Sovacool winning in a meet-record time of 15:02. By comparison, Sovacool placed third in the event in '06, finishing in 15:31. Sovacool won the Great American Legends Race at Purdue University last Friday in 25:20.0.
Additional upperclassmen leaders of the RedHawks include junior Brad Untrauer, and senior Michael Veatch. Untrauer finished third at the Great American Legends Race with a time of 26:03.0, while Veatch was third at the Dayton 5K race, ending in 15:23.0.
Several freshmen and sophomores have already made waves for the RedHawks and will continue to pick up the pace throughout the season. Kevin Silver, a sophomore, was another headliner in the Great American Legends Race, finishing second in 25:36.0. Chris Dennison, a freshman was fourth at the Purdue Race with a 26:04.0 while Michael Perry, a freshman, and sophomores Ryan Dezso and Paul Krebs all finished in 26:20.0 or faster. Freshman Robbie Fisher ran a 26:37 at Purdue, finishing ninth.
The RedHawk women's cross country team was also ranked regionally, appearing in the 14th spot in the Great Lakes Region.

The RedHawks won the Dayton 5K Challenge thanks, in part, to junior Rebekah Hollander, freshman Julianna Roche and freshman Sarah Henize have also had impressive top-15 finishes in the season's first two races.
The Miami men next run at the George Mason Invitational on September 28, while the RedHawk women return to action this Saturday at Cedarville Invitational.
