Miami University's women's cross country team will host six teams, including nationally-ranked and defending Big Ten Champion Michigan at the Miami Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13. The women's race will begin at 10:15 a.m.
Scouting The Field: The field is nearly set for the Miami Invitational as six teams have confirmed they will run at the meet. Highlighting the dockett is defending-Big Ten Champion Michigan. Joining the Wolverines will be MAC teams Akron, Ball State and Buffalo. Akron finished fifth at last year's MAC meet and were picked to take fourth this year. Ball State finished behind Toledo in 2002 and was selected to do the same this year, while Buffalo was not selected to finish inside the top six after taking 12th in the conference last year.
Last Time Out: Miami opened its season at the Flyer 5K Challenge in Kettering, Ohio. With all-American Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and all-MAC performer Katy Pryor (New Castle, Ind./New Castle) nursing injuries, only four RedHawks ran. Though the team was unable to score, senior Kylee Studer (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) and sophomore Kelly Ardelean (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) claimed the top two places. Sophomores Abbey Reeser (Circleville, Ohio/Circleville) and Jen Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) also ran, taking 10th and 16th, respectively.
Good To Be Home: The RedHawks have won the last four invitationals held at Western Campus. The last two years Miami has won both the Miami Invitational and Miami Fall Classic. Last year, the Red and White scored 22 and 23 in those two events, respectively.
Home Away From Home: Senior Andrea Kremer may be from Indianapolis, Ind., but she feels right at home at Western Campus. In six career invitationals on the course, Kremer has taken first four times and second once. Her lowest finish was a seventh place showing at the Miami Invitational as a freshman. Two weeks later, however, she won the Miami Fall Classic.
Handicapping the MAC: In the annual MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, Miami was selected to finish third at the conference championships in November, mirroring its finish from 2002. The top three picks in the poll mirror last year's MAC Championship finish, with Toledo and Ball State picked to finish first and second, respectively. Akron, Kent State and Central Michigan round out the top-six.
Leading the Way: Leading the returning core of runners in 2003 will be senior Andrea Kremer. Kremer was an all-American as a sophomore and has been the top-finisher for the RedHawks in each of her three seasons. Last year Kremer led four RedHawks in the top-11, including departed letterwinner Kristin Fryberg who took ninth. Also returning for the Red and White is senior Kylee Studer, who completed her track eligibility last year. Studer followed up Fryberg, finishing 10th.
Academic All-America: Over the summer, Miami University's women's track and field team joined the cross country team as having acheived all-America status. The RedHawks were one of only two MAC schools to accomplish the feat in 2003, joining Akron. Ceronie's squads have now accomplished the feat in back-to-back years.
While We're on the Subject: Individually, six Miami women's cross country and track & field athletes earned academic all-America status. Included on the list were Andrea Kremer and Kylee Studer for track, and Kristin Fryberg for cross country. For Studer and Fryberg, it was their first honor, while Kremer also was honored for cross country a year ago.
