TERRE HAUTE -- Miami's women's cross country team finished 11th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Terre Haute, Ind. Although the team's season is likely over, sophomore Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) advanced to the Nov. 19 NCAA Championship in Greenville, S.C. by virtue of her seventh-place finish.

Kremer took the lead in the 6,000-meter women's race at around the 4,000-meter mark and held it for the next 1,000 meters, but she ran out of gas in the final stretch. She toured the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in 21:03.0, more than 20 seconds faster than her previous best for that distance.

"She did all the right things," head coach Rich Ceronie said. "She put herself up front with six or seven other people and said, 'Come and get me.' That's exactly what you have to do at that kind of meet."

This is the second straight season Kremer has made it to the NCAA Championship, as she competed and gained all-America status in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last spring. She is the sixth woman in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championship and has the chance to join Melissa Mayers as Miami's only cross country All-Americans. Mayers accomplished the feat in 1996.

Redshirt sophomore Kristen Fryburg (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), an NCAA qualifier two years ago when she came in 11th at the regional, turned in another stellar performance, finishing 16th. She gained all-region status for the second time in her career. Senior Liz Lundgren (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) ended her career in style, taking 42nd, a dramatic improvement over her 83rd-place finish a year ago.

The next RedHawk finisher was sophomore Kate Steffen (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park), who came across in 23:16.3, good for 95th. Sophomores Kristin Wrede (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Jenny Korrison (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) followed her in 105th and 122nd, respectively. Freshman Sarah Bertolini (Louisville, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) rounded out the Miami contingent, finishing 152nd in 24:18.1.

The women's total of 260 points placed them fourth out of the 10 MAC schools at the meet. With the field at the NCAA Championship comprised of the top two teams in each region as well as 13 at-large qualifiers, chances are slim that the team's season will continue, but that will not be official until the at-large bids are handed out Monday, Nov. 12.
