The Miami women's cross country team proved it can contend with the best, even without one of its top runners in the All-Ohio Collegiate Championship at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
The RedHawk team finished third overall with 84 points in the 42-team field of Ohio colleges. Six of Miami's seven runners finished in the top-40 of the 267 finishers.
Andrea Kremer (Bishop Chatard, IN/Bishop Chatard) placed sixth with a time of 18:29.0 to lead the way for the Red and White. Miami missed the presence of all-MAC junior Kristen Fryburg (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who had placed second behind Kremer in every race before Saturday's meet. Freshman Katy Pryor (New Castle, IN/New Castle) and senior Kylee Studer (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) picked up the slack by running together to place 13th and 14th, respectively with times of 18:55.5 and 18:59.0.
Sophomore Sarah Bertolini (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) was the fourth RedHawk to cross the finish line when she placed 20th with a time of 19:07.5. Freshman Kelly Ardelean (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) and senior Sara Edwards (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter) finished next for Miami nearly six seconds apart. Ardelean placed 31st and Edwards came in 40th with times of 19:42.4 and 19:48.9.
Toledo took home first place while Kent State barely edged out the RedHawks for second place. Toledo senior Briana Shook earned the top spot with her time of 17:35.3.
The RedHawks will compete in the Pre-NCAA Invitational at Indiana State next Saturday. The race features nearly 100 Division one teams.
