DELAWARE, Ohio - Placing two runners in the meet's top 25, the Miami University women's cross country team placed fifth in a 38-team field Friday at the All-Ohio Championship. Tallying its fifth straight top-five finish at the All-Ohio, Miami placed in front of three schools from the Mid-American Conference - Bowling Green, Akron and Kent State - and also topped area rivals Cincinnati and Dayton.
For the first time in her career, freshman Kelsey McHugh (Columbus, Ohio) was the top Miami finisher, clocking in with a 20th-place time of 19:16. McHugh placed one second and one spot ahead of junior teammate Jennie Stoll (Pewaukee, Wis.), who finished in 21st place at 19:17. With her top team finish, McHugh became the third different Miamian to pace the team this season.
Junior Mia Fiegelist (Hilliard, Ohio) was the only other Miamian to place in the meet's top 35, clocking in with 33rd-place time of 19:28. Rounding out Miami's scoring five was sophomore Erin McGowan (Perrysburg, Ohio) in 49th place (19:42) and junior Sarah Henize (Bucyrus, Ohio) in 57th (19:50).
Miami finished in fifth place with 180 points, besting conference foes Bowling Green (sixth), Akron (seventh), Kent State (eighth). Miami also placed comfortably in front of area rivals Cincinnati (ninth) and Dayton (14th).
Ohio University took home the team title, finishing with 63 points, while Ohio State University was the meet runner-up. Katie Wieferich of Wooster won the individual title, clocking in with a first-place time of 18:11.
Miami competes in its third of three consecutive weekend meets when it travels to the Pre-NCAA Invitational Saturday, Oct. 14 in Terre Haute, Ind. The race will serve as Miami's final tune-up prior to the MAC Championships on Oct. 28 in Buffalo, N.Y.
