DELAWARE, Ohio - The Miami University women’s cross country ran to a second-place finish Friday afternoon at the 5K All-Ohio Championship, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University and run on the Delaware Golf Club Golf Course. The race featured 42 teams, including nine Division I schools, and 285 runners.
Senior Kelsey McHugh (Columbus, Ohio) led the way for the RedHawks finishing in ninth place overall (sixth in Division I) in a time of 18:55.2, while fellow senior Amanda Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.) was less than a second behind in 10th place (seventh in Division I). McHugh was Miami’s third different top finisher in three races this year.
“We don’t have a big distance between our top five runners, which will really help us in big meets like pre-nationals,” head coach Kelly Phillips said. “Where we lack is a front runner. We definitely have people that are capable of it; we just haven’t figured that out yet. If we can get Amanda or Kelsey to realize how good they are we can be a phenomenal team.”
Sophomore Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) was third for the ’Hawks in 19:07.7 as she crossed in 12th place (ninth in Division I), while senior Laura Neufarth (Centerville, Ohio) and junior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) rounded out Miami’s scoring five with 21st and 23rd place finishes overall, respectively.
Miami, who is ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region poll, finished 18 points behind All-Ohio champion Ohio State, who is ranked just behind the RedHawks at seventh in the region and finished with 58 points. The Buckeyes’ Jordan Jennewine was the overall winner of the race in 18:10.3. Miami finished ahead of the three other Mid-American Conference schools at the meet, topping Akron, Ohio and Bowling Green.
“Because I know what we’re capable of, I was a little disappointed,” Phillips said. “Ohio State has a really good team but I don’t think we were hungry enough. We haven’t gotten a meet yet where we we’ve been able to put it all together.
Kelley Miller was sick today which hurt, but even with her in the race I don’t know if we would have caught Ohio State. I definitely think we can beat them so I was disappointed we didn’t win.”
