OXFORD, Ohio - Junior Sarah Henize (Bucyrus, Ohio) finished as the individual champion and the Miami University women's cross country team placed five of the top six runners as it turned in a first-place finish Saturday morning at the 21st Miami Invitational. Miami tallied 16 points, just one shy of the lowest possible point total, and finished 40 points ahead of second-place University of the Cumberlands.
On a calm and sunny day at Western Campus Course, Henize won her first career individual title, clocking in with a first-place time of 18:54.01. Locked in a neck-and-neck battle with junior teammate Jennie Stoll (Pewaukee, Wis.), Henize was able to put distance between herself and Stoll in the backstretch of the 5K course and win the individual title by more than eight seconds. Stoll clocked in with a second-place time of 19:02.54.
Placing in the scoring five for the second consecutive week was freshman Kelsey McHugh (Columbus, Ohio), who finished with a third-place time of 19:11.26. After not competing in a cross country race prior to last weekend's Flyer 5K Challenge, the former high school field hockey player has now finished in Miami's scoring five in each of her first two collegiate cross country races.
Rounding out Miami's scoring five were junior Mia Fiegelist (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomore Erin McGowan (Perrysburg, Ohio), who placed fourth (19:12.23) and sixth (19:44.07), respectively. Only one non-Miamian placed in the meet's top 10, as Kelly Schnee of Cumberlands placed fifth.
While not among the scoring five, the RedHawks placed the seventh through 10th runners at the Miami Invitational. Freshman Amanda Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.), sophomore Rebekah Hollander (Centerville, Ohio), freshman Jessica DeWitt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Jenna Kruse (Chatham, Ill.) finished seventh through tenth, respectively, with all five clocking in within 30 seconds of each other.
