KETTERING, Ohio - Placing five runners in the top nine, the Miami women's cross country team earned its third straight Dayton Flyer 5K Invitational title Saturday morning at Indian Riffle Park in the first race of the season for the RedHawks.
Sophomore Margaret Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) led Miami with a third-place finish in 18:17, after placing seventh as a freshman at last year's race. Redshirt senior Laura Neufarth (Centerville, Ohio), who was the two-time defending champion at the race, finished fourth in 18:23, while junior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) was fifth just a second later.
Junior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) was the RedHawks' fourth finisher, crossing the line in eighth, while senior Amanda Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.) rounded out Miami's scoring five in ninth place, the same spot she claimed at the 2008 rendition, as the 'Hawks finished with 29 points. Freshman Alanah Sonntag (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed 14th in her first race for Miami, while senior Kelsey McHugh (Columbus, Ohio) was 15th to round out the top seven for the Red and White.
Dayton's Maura Bulgrin was the top individual in 18:03, while teammate Liz Coorey was second overall. The Flyers finished second behind Miami with 32 points, while Ohio State (76 points) was third with IUPUI (108), Wright State (148) and Morehead State (173) placing fourth through sixth, respectively, among teams competing from Division I.
The RedHawks return to action Friday, Sept. 18, at the MSU Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
