OXFORD, Ohio-Sophomore outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV Volleyball First Team, while senior middle hitter Jennifer Eaton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) earned Second Team Verizon Academic All-District IV Volleyball recognition for the second straight year. By earning first-team laurels, Buroker's name is now among the mix for Verizon Academic All-America honors. Buroker is just the fifth Miami volleyball student-athlete to achieve first-team academic all-district honors and is the youngest in program history to do so.
This season, Buroker, who boasts a 3.94 grade-point average while majoring in marketing, was named to the Miami Classic, Georgia Tech and TCU Invitational all-tournament teams, becoming the only RedHawk on all three all-tournament teams this season. Following the first weekend of play, Buroker was tabbed Mid-American Conference Player of the Week (9-2-02) after a then career-high 29 digs in a four-game win over IPFW. Just a few weeks ago, she was selected as the MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week (11-5-02) following a week in which she averaged 5.40 digs per game, including a 20-dig performance in a five-game match versus Ohio and a career-best 34 digs (6.80 per game) in a five-game match versus Akron. Her 34 digs are the most by a Miami player in more than six years. Buroker owns a team-high 16 kill/dig double-doubles this season. She has been in double figures for digs in 20 matches this season and has tallied 20 or more digs on six occasions this season, eclipsing 28 digs in three of those matches. She leads the team, averaging 3.06 kills per game and 3.77 digs per game. One of three Miami captains this season, Buroker is the youngest captain ever to be named for a Miami volleyball squad.
Eaton, who owns a 3.76 grade-point average while majoring in psychology and minoring in pre-med, has quickly climbed Miami's blocking charts, currently sitting at No. 4 on the RedHawks' block assist chart with 321 block assists and owning the No. 9 spot on Miami's solo block list with 52. Last season, Eaton finished the year ranked 13th nationally in blocks (1.52 per game) and established a Miami single-season record of 128 block assists. This season, she leads the team, averaging 1.20 blocks per game. She produced the most triple-doubles of any Miami player in the history of the program, achieving the feat four times last season to tie for the national lead in triple-doubles during the 2001 campaign. In 2001, Eaton earned MAC all-Tournament Team honors and was a second-team all-MAC selection. Twice during her Miami career, Eaton has been named MAC East Division Player of the Week and MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week and is a three-year member of the MAC Honor Roll and two-time member of the Academic All-MAC team.
