CLEVELAND--Miami University sophomore outside hitter Emily Schroeder (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) became the first Miami sophomore in a decade to capture First-Team All-Mid-American Conference volleyball honors, and junior middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) garnered her third all-conference accolade, earning Second-Team All-MAC recognition, the conference office announced at the tournament banquet tonight (Nov. 16).
Schroeder has been a dominant force in the MAC, averaging 4.91 kills per game and hitting .328 in conference matches to rank third among MAC statistical leaders in both categories. She is the only MAC player to rank among the top three in each category. She also ranked third in the MAC in league-only matches in points per game (5.62). Through 29 matches this season, Schroeder is averaging an impressive 4.36 kills per game. During the course of the season, she compiled 20 or more kills in 10 matches, including a career-high 24 kills in a four-game win over Kent State on Oct. 27. She has hit .350 or better in 10 matches this season, including three matches hitting over .500. Schroeder also amassed 20 or more digs in two matches, including 22 digs in a five-game match with Northern Illinois on Nov. 4.
Schroeder has been climbing the Miami single-season charts this season. Her current 4.35 kills per game average would rank first, eclipsing the previous single-season record of 4.26 kills per game by Kathy Tepe in 1985. Schroeder also owns 462 kills this season, which ties for third on Miami's single-season list and sets a Miami sophomore record for kills in a season. She is 66 kills away from breaking Miami's single-season record of 527 kills by Angel Miller in 1991. Schroeder became the first player in a decade to move onto Miami's single-season kill chart. Twice this season she has been decorated as the MAC East Division Player of the Week, earning the honor on Oct. 2 and Oct. 30. Schroeder became Miami's first First-Team All-MAC selection since Kelly McCullough captured the honor in 2001 and the first sophomore to capture the award since Lori Reinart in 1994.
Reihman was named to all four regular-season all-tournament teams this season, extending her string of all-tournament team honors to seven straight tournaments over the past two seasons, and earned the conference's first East Division Player of the Week award this season on Aug. 28. She leads the team in service aces (37), blocks per game (0.85) and hitting percentage (.277). Currently she ranks sixth on Miami's career hitting percentage list (.296) and is averaging 3.00 kills per game for her career, which ranks ninth at Miami. Reihman is closing in on her 1,000th kill and is 32 kills away from reaching the plateau that only 14 other Miami players have accomplished. Twice this season she has amassed 20 or more kills, including a career-high 24 kills in five games against Tennessee State. She ranks second on the team in kills per game (3.23) and third in digs per game (2.28).
Reihman earned Honorable Mention All-MAC honors as both a freshman and sophomore and has been named to an All-MAC team each of her three years at Miami. She is the ninth player in program history to earn all-conference honors three times in her career and could become the just second player in Miami volleyball history to capture all-conference accolades all four seasons.
Miami earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the Mid-American Conference Tournament and will face No. 5 seed Western Michigan in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio.
