LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: For the first time in program history, a home Miami volleyball match will be televised. The RedHawks' Nov. 11 match with No. 20 Ohio will be televised on a tape-delay basis by local Time Warner Cable. Dates, times and stations for the replay of the match are TBA.
HOME STRETCH: As the 2005 Mid-American Conference regular season comes to a close this season, Miami rounds out conference action hosting two matches this weekend. The RedHawks host No. 20 Ohio at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, before clashing with Kent State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Miami started MAC action, playing five of its first six matches on the road.
REDHAWKS HONOR SENIORS: Prior to Saturday's match versus Kent State, Miami will honor its three seniors--Megan Clark, Kristen Walters and Suzy Wolford--who are playing in their final regular-season home match at Millett Hall.
MIAMI AND THE MAC TOURNAMENT: Miami has secured the opportunity to host a first-round match in the Mid-American Conference Tournament and still has an outside chance at receiving a first-round bye. Miami must defeat Ohio and Kent State, Ball State must lose at Eastern Michigan and at Central Michigan, while Western Michigan must lose at Buffalo on Saturday. All three would end with a 10-6 record and Ball State would be the No. 3 seed, Miami would be the No. 4 seed, while Western Michigan would be the No. 5 seed after a head-to-head tie-breaker among the three teams.
WOLFORD DIGGING IN: For the ninth time this season and the 16th time in her career, senior libero Suzy Wolford hit the 20-dig mark in a match, recording 23 digs in a four-game match vs. Bowling Green on Nov. 3. In mid-September, Wolford recorded 20-plus digs in four straight matches, including a career-high 29 digs in a five-game match at Ball State.
WOLFORD CLOSING IN ON 500: With 416 digs this season and at least five matches remaining, senior libero Suzy Wolford could become the first Miami player to reach 500 digs in a season. Miami's single-season mark currently stands at 463, and Wolford needs just 48 digs to break that mark. Needing 84 digs to reach the 500 dig plateau, Wolford would need to average 17 digs per match over the next five matches.
CLARK MAKING HER MARK: Senior setter Megan Clark, who already has her name on Miami's career lists, is working towards placing her name on some single-season charts too. Her current 11.63 assists per game average ranks eighth on Miami's single-season list, while sitting just 173 assists shy of cracking the RedHawks' single-season top-10 chart. This would be the first time Clark has placed her name on either single-season list.
CLARK SETS CAREER HIGH: With 71 assists in a five-game match at Ohio, senior setter Megan Clark established a career-high for assists. It marked the first 70-assist outing of her career and bettered her previous career best of 67 assists against Central Michigan on Nov. 16, 2002.
FRESHMAN BRINGS COMPLETE PACKAGE TO THE COURT: Freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder has been the complete package for the RedHawks this season and is making a strong case to be voted the MAC Freshman of the Year. Schroeder is leading the team in kills (3.40 kpg) and blocks (1.00 bpg) and ranks second in digs (2.80 dpg) and third in service aces (27). She ranks among MAC leaders in service aces (7th) and points (10th).
STRONG IN OCTOBER: Over the past two seasons October has been a favorable month for the RedHawks. This season, Miami went 7-2 in October, accounting for seven of its eight Mid-American Conference wins. Last season, the RedHawks posted five wins in October, which accounted for 71.4 percent of their MAC wins.
`HAWKS WITH A KILLER INSTINCT: This season, Miami has received a fairly even distribution on the offensive attack from its hitting corps. The RedHawks, who are averaging 16.03 kills per game--third in the MAC--to their opponents' 14.89 kills per game, have five players who average 2.70 kills per game or better. Freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder leads the way, averaging 3.40 kpg, while sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman follows at 3.22 kpg. Freshman outside hitter Alex Ratcliff averages 2.81 kpg, while sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun averages 2.79 kpg, and sophomore outside hitter Kate Norris averages 2.73 kpg.
WOLFORD AND CLARK KEEP CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Seniors Suzy Wolford and Megan Clark continue to climb Miami's career top-10 charts. The weekend of Oct. 28-29, Clark moved into third on Miami's career assist list. Entering the weekend she owns 3,346 assists, while tying for fourth on Miami's assists per game list with a career average of 9.29 apg. The weekend of Oct. 7-8 Clark became the fourth player to surpass 3,000 career assists with her 18-assist performance at Akron on Oct. 8. Wolford is averaging 4.57 digs per game this season and should shatter Miami's single-season digs per game record of 3.98 dpg. She has upped her career dpg average to 3.20, which ranks first on Miami's career list ahead of Stephanie Otten's career dpg average of 3.08. Wolford jumped to fourth on Miami's career digs list with 1,176 and needs just 36 more move into the No. 4 spot. She became just the ninth player in program history to join the 1,000 dig club with her 16-dig performance in a three-game win over Bowling Green on Sept. 28.
ON TARGET: For the first time since 1999, Miami hit .400 or better as a team and posted its best hitting percentage in 14 years when it notched a .466 hitting percentage in a three-game win at Kent State on Oct. 28. The RedHawks connected on 48 of their 88 attempts while making a mere seven attack errors for the match. Miami had four players hit above .500: Jeanna Staun (10-1-15, .600), Carli Reihman (8-0-14, .571), Alex Ratcliff (7-1-11, .545) and Emily Schroeder (15-1-27, .519). The last time a Miami team hit better than .466 was when the Red and White posted a .471 hitting percentage in a three-game match at Kent State on Oct. 26, 1991.
ACES ARE WILD: Service aces have been a solid area for the RedHawks this season. The team ranks second in the league with 1.71 service aces per game and third in conference-only action with 1.46 service aces per game. Miami has five players who have been solid contributors from the service line. Sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun and sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman pace the RedHawks with 29 and 28 service aces apiece this season, while freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder has notched 27 service aces. Senior libero Suzy Wolford follows with 20, and senior setter Megan Clark has recorded 16. Schroeder is serving up nearly two aces to every service error to post a 1.8 service ace to error ratio to lead Miami. Against Virginia Tech, Schroeder served up six aces, which is the most by a RedHawk in a match this season. Staun ranks fourth in the Mid-American Conference by averaging 0.42 service aces per game in conference matches.
MIAMI AMONG REGIONAL LEADERS: In the most recent regional rankings, Miami ranks 13th in the Mideast Region. Ohio is fifth, while Eastern Michigan is 10th, Ball State is 11th and Western Michigan is 12th. In the Rich Kern Percentage Index, Miami owns a national ranking of 75.
ABOUT OHIO: The Bobcats head into Oxford this weekend posting the best record in the league (14-0), a 37-match MAC winning streak, including the Mid-American Conference Tournament, and a No. 20 national ranking. Along with those accolades, the Bobcats have won 16 games in a row this season and are 6-0 on the road during conference play. Julia Winkfield leads Ohio's offensive attack averaging 3.82 kills per game and hitting at a .407 mark. Winkfield's hitting percentage leads the MAC and her .404 clip in conference play is second in the league. Savanah Parra is averaging a team best 14.68 assists per game, and Melissa Griffin is averaging 0.89 blocks per game.
THE SERIES WITH THE BOBCATS: Miami leads the overall series 40-14. Ohio has won the last eight matches against Miami, including a five-game thriller two weeks ago in Athens. When playing in Oxford, the `Hawks are 19-4 against the Bobcats with all of those losses occurring in the last five years.
ABOUT KENT STATE: The Golden Flashes are coming off a five-game win against Cleveland State on Monday and play at Bowling Green on Friday night before rounding out the MAC regular season at Miami on Saturday.
