OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's volleyball team received national letters of intent from 6-foot-0 setter Michelle Mangia (Blacklick, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and 6-foot-1 middle hitter Michele Metzler (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg), head coach Carolyn Condit announced today (Nov. 8).

Mangia was a second-team all-state selection and also was tabbed the district player of the year as a senior. She was a two-time First-Team All-CCL selection, while earning first-team all-district accolades in 2006. She paced the Hawks to a 20-6 overall record and 8-0 league mark as a junior as Bishop Hartley captured CCL and district titles and advanced to the regional semifinals. As a senior, Mangia spearheaded the team to a 24-4 overall mark and a 7-1 league record, tying Bishop Hartley for first in the CCL. The Hawks won their second consecutive district title and advanced to the regional finals, earning a No. 4 ranking in the state. She was named to the Central District All-Star Team and also was named to the state All-Star team

"Michelle is one of the top setters in the region and knows how to develop an offense with her hitters," said Condit. "She has good accuracy and plays with a competitive desire that complements our championship goals at Miami."

Metzler amassed 1,366 career kills to break the Lawrenceburg High School record. She was a two-time second-team all-state selection, ranking sixth in the state in kills as a junior and 11th in kills as a senior. In 2006, Metzler averaged 5.3 kills, 1.3 blocks and 2.4 digs per game, while posting a .431 hitting percentage and launching 33 service aces. Metzler also was a two-time all-conference selection. She spearheaded Lawrenceburg to three sectional titles and two conference crowns, while amassing a 99-27 record during her four-year career. Metzler has been selected to try out for the Senior Indiana All-Star Team later this month.

"Michele is a very quick, explosive middle who could impact our line- up as a freshman," said Condit. "She plays with an energy and desire that is contagious, and she will add to the athleticism, talent and future success of our RedHawk program."
