CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced Monday that both of its weekly East Division volleyball awards have been won by Miami athletes. Senior setter Andrea Atteberry (Schererville, Ind.) was named Offensive Player of the Week, while senior outside hitter Maria Leahy (St. Louis, Mo.) was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Atteberry had an overall great week both as an offensive player, and as the setter creating the offense. On Friday she became the third player in Miami history to record her 4,000th career assist. She followed that up Saturday with her first career triple-double. She had a career-high 10 kills to go along with 35 assists and 13 digs. She was very smart in her decisions as to when to attack as she led the team with a .455 hitting percentage for the week.
Leahy continued to be one of the leaders defensively, despite also being the top offensive threat with 3.25 kills per set last week. She was second on the team with an average of 3.62 digs per set and only made four errors on reception. Leahy also helped lead the RedHawk defense into forcing the opposition to a .113 hitting percentage for the week.
Miami hits the road next week for more MAC action. The Redhawks travel to Bowling Green Thursday, Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. match and follow it with an 8 p.m. (EDT) match at Northern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 3.
