CINCINNATI – Megan Griffin became the 18th player in Miami history to record 1,000 career kills in her final game, as the Miami RedHawks fell to Cincinnati, 0-3, in their season finale. The RedHawks finish the year at 17-14, while the Bearcats improve to 25-10.
Griffin needed five kills going into the match to reach the historic 1,000 kill mark, and she recorded that on Miami’s 16th point of the second set. She finished the match with seven kills and finishes her career with 1,002 kills.
The four seniors controlled the game early in set one for Miami as Hallie Hanks, Maria Leahy and Griffin each recorded kills off Andrea Atteberry assists. Michele Metzler then followed up with a kill of her own to give the RedHawks a 6-5 lead. A 9-3 run by Cincinnati put the Bearcats up 14-9. The teams traded points until the score was 22-19 in favor of Cincinnati. The RedHawks were able to tie the score at 22 by recording the next three points off kills by Amy Raseman and Leahy, as well as a Bearcat attack error, but Cincinnati followed with three straight points of its own to win the set, 25-22.
With the score tied at five in the second set, Cincinnati scored six consecutive points to take control. Griffin’s final two kills to reach 1,000 sparked a 11-8 run that pulled the RedHawks to within three at 16-19. After a Bearcat point, Griffin and Cassie Farrell kills made it 18-20, but Cincinnati took the second set 25-19 by closing on a 5-1 run.
Set three started well for Miami as Griffin got another kill off an Atteberry assist, while Metzler and Leahy teamed up on a block to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. After falling behind 3-6, Metzler recorded two kills and another block as Miami scored the next four to take a 7-6 advantage. The turning point in the set came with the score tied at 10. Cincinnati scored the next five points to take a 15-10 lead, an advantage it would not relinquish. With the score 20-15, the Bearcats scored the final five points to earn a 25-15 victory.
Leahy and Metzler led the RedHawks with eight kills each. Hanks recorded six kills in her final match as a RedHawk. Atteberry had 27 assists as she finishes her career with 4,621 assists, which ranks second on the Miami career list. Lisa Treadway and Atteberry led the team with eight digs each.
