DEKALB, Ill. - Miami University's volleyball team ended its season with a three-game loss to No. 1 seed and host Northern Illinois (23-5) in the semifinal of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, 18-30, 27-30, 19-30. The RedHawks conclude the 2001 campaign with a 15-12 record.
Miami jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead, highlighted by a kill from Kelly McCullough and a block by McCullough and Susan Poll. The Huskies, however, notched four straight points to take a lead it would not relinquish. NIU built a five-point edge, 15-10, but Miami rattled off four unanswered points, capped by a Jen Eaton service ace. Again the Huskies built their lead to five, 20-15. With a block by Erika Eagan and a Poll kill, Miami closed the gap to four, 17-21. The two teams traded points to make the score 18-22. The Huskies collected eight points to end the game, 30-18.
In the second set, the two teams went back and forth with neither holding more than a two-point advantage until NIU took a 24-20 lead. Miami closed the gap to one, 24-25, with a pair of kills by McCullough, a kill from Eaton and one from Eagan. Down 26-29, Lee Ann Karr knocked down a kill to give the RedHawks their 27th point. But a block by the Huskies ended any hope of a comeback as Northern Illinois took the second game, 30-27.
NIU built a 15-5 advantage in the third stanza, which proved to be an insurmountable lead as the RedHawks fell 19-30. A Tara Buroker ace highlighted the third game for the Red and White.
For the RedHawks, McCullough and Eaton each tallied 10 kills apiece, while Eagan notched 12 digs. McCullough also posted three blocks.
