HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Miami University's volleyball team earned its first three-game Mid-American Conference victory on the road in over a year, downing Marshall 30-18, 30-24 and 30-23. Miami improves to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in MAC play, while Marshall falls to 6-19 overall and 4-12 in league action.
In the first game, the RedHawks used a seven-point scoring run, highlighted by a Robyn Byrnes service ace, to extend its lead to 15-7 and virtually put the first set out of reach. Miami went on mini scoring spurts throughout the first stanza to top Marshall 30-18.
Marshall took a 3-1 lead early in the second game, but the RedHawks six straight points off a Kelly McCullough kill, a pair of blocks by McCullough and Susan Poll, a solo block by Poll and a Jennifer Eaton service ace to take a 7-3 edge. The Thundering Herd came back and pulled within one, 15-16, but Miami outscored Marshall 14-9 down the stretch to take the second game 30-24.
Miami used four service aces, including two consecutive by Erika Eagan, en rout to a 30-22 game-three win. Byrnes and Eaton also contributed service aces for the 'Hawks. It was a tight game through the early stages, but the RedHawks pulled out to a 22-14 advantage. A pair of blocks by McCullough/Eaton and a kill by McCullough aided Miami down the stretch.
McCullough paced the RedHawks with 15 kills, six blocks (two solo), eight digs and a .560 hitting percentage. Eagan contributed a match-high 18 digs, while Eaton added six blocks (one solo).
