DEKALB, Ill. - Junior outside hitter Emily Schroeder's 22 kills led the RedHawks to a Mid-American Conference win over Northern Illinois on Saturday evening. In game two, Schroeder became the 17th Miami player to reach 1,000 kills for her career. Schroeder and senior middle hitter Carli Reihman collected double-doubles for Miami (13-8; 10-2 MAC), while Northern Illinois (11-15; 5-7 MAC) lost its fourth consecutive match.
Up one point in game one, 3-2, a kill by senior outside hitter Jeanna Staun and two kills by sophomore Megan Griffin helped the RedHawks take a 7-2 lead. Strong play by Megan Schoenrock allowed Northern Illinois to take nine of the next 11 points giving the Huskies an 11-9 lead. After a kill and a service ace by junior outside hitter Alex Ratcliff tied the game, 12-12, Northern Illinois went on another spurt and took a six-point lead, 22-16. Trailing 21-24, a service ace by freshman setter Michelle Mangia, two kills by Schroeder and a set of Northern Illinois errors allowed Miami to re-gain a one-point lead, 27-26. However, two Miami errors proved to be too much to overcome as the Huskies won game one, 30-28.
Three service aces by junior libero Melissa Zenz and two kills by Reihman catapulted the RedHawks to a 6-1 lead in game two. Leading by eight points, 14-6, a kill by sophomore setter Andrea Atteberry and a block by Atteberry and Reihman gave Miami a 10-point lead, 16-6. With the RedHawks leading 23-16, Schroeder put down her sixth kill of the match, becoming the 17th Miami player to reach 1,000 kills for her career. Northern Illinois cut Miami's lead to two points, 27-25, but kills by Staun and Griffin cemented a 30-26 game-two win.
