MUNCIE, Ind. – A balanced offensive attack allowed Miami to take a hard fought 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Ball State Saturday night. The RedHawks improve to 12-10 overall and 7-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals are 10-13 overall and 3-7 in the MAC.

The first half of set one was close throughout and featured six lead changes. With the score tied at 14, Ball State went on a 6-3 run to take a 20-17 advantage. Miami pulled to within one at 20-21 thanks to kills from Maria Leahy and Megan Griffin, as well as a service ace from Griffin. That would be as close as the RedHawks would get however, as the Cardinals took four of the next five points to earn a 25-21 victory.

Amy Kendall’s strong serve forced Ball State into several attack errors early in set two, as the RedHawks to a 5-2 lead. Three kills from Leahy, as well as a block from Michele Metzler and Cassie Farrell keyed a 13-9 run that put Miami ahead, 18-11. The Cardinals responded with their own 12-3 run to actually take the advantage at 23-22. Ball State recorded a service error and an attack error on the next two points, and Metzler evened the match at one set apiece by putting down the winning kill off an Andrea Atteberry assist.

Set three started off poorly for Miami, as Ball State raced to a 10-3 lead. The RedHawks did not give in and responded by scoring the next nine points in a row to take a 12-10 advantage. In that run Hallie Hanks put down two kills, while Metzler assisted on two blocks. With the score tied at 18, a kill from Metzler, a service ace by Atteberry and an attack error by Ball State put the RedHawks ahead, 21-18. The Cardinals went on a 5-3 run to close to within one at 23-24, but Hanks answered with a kill to close out the 25-23 win.


 

 

Tied at seven in the fourth set, a 9-3 run featuring two kills apiece from Leahy and Metzler put Miami up, 16-10. With the score 19-13, an attack error by the Cardinals and a kill from Jenn Caylor gave Miami an eight point cushion. Ball State would make things interesting with an 8-3 run to pull within three at 21-24, but Leahy closed out the match with the kill off an Atteberry assist.

Leahy led the RedHawks with 11 kills, while Griffin and Metzler contributed eight each. Lisa Treadway recorded 12 digs, while Atteberry was the leader with 24 assists.

Miami returns to action next Friday when it travels to Akron for a 7 p.m. match.
