RedHawks Earn Fourth Straight Win with 3-1 Victory Over Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Miami improved its winning streak to four straight Saturday with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17) victory over Akron. The RedHawks improve to 11-7 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips are 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the MAC.

Maria Leahy and Andrea Atteberry each scored early kills as Miami took a 5-1 lead in set one. The RedHawks extended the lead to 13-5, on a run that featured kills from Megan Griffin and Hallie Hanks. Griffin capped that run with two consecutive solo blocks. With the score 22-14, Atteberry and Griffin teamed up to block the Zip’s Liz Martin. After Akron scored two points to pull within seven at 16-23, Miami closed out the first set with a kill by Atteberry to create set point, and forced a Zip attack error to clinch a 25-16 win.

Atteberry helped lead the RedHawks to a 7-5 lead in set two as she assisted on three Miami kills. The teams traded points throughout the middle portion of the set until they found themselves tied at 15. Miami went ahead 20-16 on a 5-1 run that featured kills from Hanks, Griffin and Jenn Caylor. That lead held, as with the score 24-21, Miami won set two as Akron’s final serve went out-of-bounds.

The RedHawks fell behind 1-5 early in the third set. It proved to be a difficult deficit to overcome, as Akron was able to maintain a lead of three-to-five points throughout the majority of the set. Trailing 18-21, Miami scored two consecutive points off a Leahy kill and a Zip attack error. Akron scored two of the next three points to take a 24-22 lead. The RedHawks fought off one set point with a kill by Hanks, but the Zips scored a kill of their own on the next point to win set three, 25-23.


 

 

With the score tied at 14 in set four, Miami reeled off five consecutive points off Amy Raseman’s serve, as Griffin scored a kill and the RedHawks forced Akron into four straight attack errors. The teams traded points until the score was 23-17 in favor of Miami. Hanks scored a kill off an Atteberry assist to create match point, and Metzler put down her own kill to give the RedHawks the 25-17 set four win.

Atteberry had another strong day with 40 assists. Griffin led the team with 13 kills, while Leahy and Melissa Zenz each had 13 digs.

Miami has another two-game MAC road trip next weekend when it travels to Central Michigan Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday, October 18 match against Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.
