KENT, Ohio - Miami University's volleyball team finished off a great weekend with a three-game sweep over Kent State in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday evening. Miami (6-7; 3-1 MAC) won its third consecutive match, while Kent State (12-5; 3-1 MAC) dropped its first MAC match of the season. In game one, senior outside hitter Jeanna Staun became the 16th Miami player to collect 1,000 kills for her career. Staun finished the match with seven kills and has 1,004 kills for her career.

Miami and Kent State battled to a 10-10 tie in the first game, until a block by senior middle hitter Carli Reihman and junior outside hitter Alex Ratcliff and a kill by Reihman put Miami up 12-10. Miami slowly extended its lead as three kills through the Kent State block by freshman middle hitter Michele Metzler and a kill by Staun put the RedHawks up 25-19. Despite a Kent State rally that closed the gap to four points, 25-29, a kill by Reihman gave the RedHawks a 30-25 game-one win. The RedHawks hit .351 in the first game as five Miami players accumulated three or more kills. As Miami held a four-point lead, 28-24, a kill by Staun gave her 1,000 kills for her career. Staun becomes the 17th Miami player to collect 1,000 kills for her career.

Miami fell behind early in game two as the RedHawks committed eight errors giving the Golden Flashes a 10-6 cushion. Miami remained calm and collected six consecutive points as strong serving from Reihman, including a service ace, put Miami up 13-11. Kent State took the next two points, tying the game at 13-13, and eight more ties ensued with the last occurring at 27-27. The game looked to be in Kent State's control as the Golden Flashes held game point, 29-27, but a kill by Reihman and an attack error pulled the RedHawks even, 29-29, and a kill by Ratcliff and another Kent State attack error gave Miami the 31-29 come-from-behind win.

 

 

A block by Reihman and Metzler and a service ace by Reihman combined with three Kent State errors put Miami up 5-0 and forced the Golden Flashes to burn a timeout early in game three. Miami and Kent State exchanged site outs as the RedHawks held on to its five-point advantage at 17-12. Kent State remained tough and notched the score at 18-18, but two kills apiece by Ratcliff and Metzler carried the RedHawks to a 25-22 lead. Two kills by Griffin and a service ace by Staun helped put Miami at match point, 29-22. Kent State cut the Miami lead to three points, 29-26, but a Golden Flashes service error gave Miami a 30-26 win.

For the second consecutive match, four RedHawk players posted double-digit kills led by Griffin's 13 kills.

Lauren Jones led the Golden Flashes with nine kills.

Miami heads home for the first two of four consecutive home MAC matches beginning with Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5. The RedHawks finish with Akron at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
