2003 MIDEAST REGIONAL CHAMPION: Andrea Kremer - 3,000-meter steeplechase

MEET THE REDHAWKS: Senior Brian Godsey (West Chester, Lakota East) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Mideast Regional on the campus of Ohio State University to qualify for the national meet. Godsey entered the meet with the eighth fastest time in the region and finished with a time of 14:10.17. Godsey, who owns the 24th fastest time in the 5,000-meter run, qualified with the fourth fastest time at the NCAA Regional meet in Columbus, Ohio on May 30.

This is quite an accomplishment for Godsey as he sat out the past year due to a bout with mononucleosis. Godsey did not compete in most of last year's outdoor track and field season and redshirted this year's cross country season due to the ongoing strain of mono. Earlier this month, Godsey earned his second Verizon all-region honor as he was named to the second team after his sophomore year. Two weeks ago, Godsey became one of five athletes to earn all-MAC distinction along with academic all-MAC acclaim. Godsey set an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:19.33 in the 5,000-meter run at the Miami Invitational. Godsey bettered his NCAA provisional qualifying time at the Penn Relays, finishing the race with a personal best time of 14:02.50, which is fifth on Miami's all-time top-10. Godsey earned his ninth career MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award on March 25. Heading into the MAC Championships, Godsey held the fastest time in the 3,000-meter run and the third fastest time in the 5,000-meter run. Godsey was named second-team all-MAC after his second place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the MAC Championships. Godsey holds a 3.78 with a major in Mathematics and Statistics.

Junior Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) ran a season best time at the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last weekend to claim first place and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA National meet. Kremer, who entered the regional with the second best time, won the race by more than three seconds over Brianna Dahm from Marquette University. Kremer's 10:16.16 time ranks second on Miami's all-time top-ten and holds the nation's 11th fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Kremer is well versed on regional and national academic and athletic awards. Kremer gained academic all-America status from the United States Track Coaches Association and the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association, as well as academic all-district honors from Verizon last season. This year, Kremer has been named Verizon all-region, academic all-MAC and first-team all-MAC. In addition, Kremer continued to rewrite the record books in the 3000-meter steeplechase earlier this season at the Jesse Owens Classic as her NCAA Qualifying Standard time ranked second in Miami history and among the nation's elite. Kremer also met an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 5,000-meter run as she ran the second fastest time in school history behind former all-American, Molly Cullen at the Adidas Raleigh Relays. At the MAC Championships, Kremer crushed the 3,000-meter steeplechase competition as she won by nearly 11 seconds with a track-record time. Kremer also set a track-record time in the 5,000-meter run for first place. Finally, Kremer took sixth in the 1,500-meter run to nearly miss the NCAA Regional Qualifying time with her season-best time.

After earning first-team all-MAC status, the MAC Championship Most Valuable Performance award and academic all-MAC, junior Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) capped off the season by earning a trip to Sacramento. Collins' personal record throw of 193'07" at the MAC meet in the hammer throw gives her the 20th best mark heading into the national meet. Her mark crushed the MAC meet record by nearly nine feet and also the track record by the same distance for first place. Collins' throw also beat the Miami record by almost 21 feet.

In the shot put, Collins broke the Miami school record with an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 49'01.5" for first place. Collins took second in the discus with a 153'10" mark at the MAC meet. At the Southern Ohio Cup, Collins threw her season best NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 154'11" in the discus. Collins earned the MAC Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week award on April 7. Collins received her second career MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award on Feb. 12 during the indoor track and field season. Collins holds a 3.53 GPA in Interdisciplinary Studies

Sophomore David Mitchell's (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) NCAA National qualifying time came when he ran the school's fourth-fastest time in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 14:01.20 at the Penn Relays on April 24. Mitchell enters the National meet with the 20th fastest time in the nation in the 5,000-meter run. This season, Mitchell has already been tabbed as an academic all-MAC selection in outdoor track and field.

Mitchell is not new to academic and athletic honors as he also recently was named to the Academic All-MAC team for track and field. In addition, he was tabbed MAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week during the track and field season. At Cincinnati, Mitchell ran the school's third-fastest time in the 1,500-meter run in 3:46.86. Michell was second-team all-MAC along with academic all-MAC in cross country earlier this year. Heading into the MAC Championships, Mitchell held the third fastest time in the 3,000-meter run and second fastest time in the 5,000-meter run and the 1,500-meter run. Mitchell holds a 3.55 GPA in English Literature
