Sophomore David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) and junior Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) received word from the NCAA on early Monday morning that both earned at-large bids and will join senior Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and junior Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) at the NCAA National Meet in Sacramento, Calif., beginning Wednesday, June 11.
After earning first-team all-MAC status, the MAC Championship Most Valuable Performance award and academic all-MAC, Collins capped off the season by earning a trip to Sacramento. Collins' personal record throw of 193'07" at the MAC meet in the hammer throw gives her the 20th best mark heading into the national meet. Her mark crushed the MAC meet record by nearly nine feet and also the track record by the same distance for first place. Collins' throw also beat the Miami record by almost 21 feet.
Mitchell's NCAA National qualifying time came when he ran the school's fourth-fastest time in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 14:01.20 at the Penn Relays on April 24. Mitchell enters the National meet with the 20th fastest time in the nation in the 5,000-meter run. This season, Mitchell has already been tabbed as an academic all-MAC selection in outdoor track and field.
Godsey, who owns the 24th fastest time in the 5,000-meter run, qualified with the fourth fastest time at the NCAA Regional meet in Columbus, Ohio on May 30. Kremer, who holds the 11th fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, won the race at the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 31 to qualify for the National meet.
All four athletes will compete on Wednesday, June 11 in Sacramento, Calif. in order to qualify for the finals on Friday, June 13.
