YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Miami men's track and field team goes in search of its 15th Mid-American Conference championship and the women its second Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19 at Eastern Michigan's Olds/Marshall Track in Ypsilanti, Mich. The women are coming off a fourth-place performance in 2001 while their male counterparts look to improve on their seventh-place finish of a year ago.
Sophomore Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), the men's lone conference champion last year, has not competed in more than three weeks because of a groin injury, although he should be close to 100 percent by the start of the meet. Somerville has the best long jump mark this season in the MAC (a school-record 24-11 1/4) and the fourth-best triple jump (48-11 3/4), both of which he recorded April 20 at the Miami Invitational.
Three other RedHawk men head into the meet as the top seeds in their respective events. Junior Javin Tucker (Madison, Ohio/Trotwood) has the fastest 400 hurdle time (52.46), sophomore Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) the fastest 5,000 clocking (14:19.11) and senior Robert Frazier (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) the best discus throw (176-7). Claunch, along with freshman David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) and sophomore Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton/Tennessee), also should contend in the 1,500, as they own three of the MAC's top eight times.
Juniors Ed Morgan (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) ran the conference's second-fastest 800 (1:49.90) and 5,000 (14:20.49), respectively. First-year high-jumper Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) enters the championships as the No. 4 seed, having cleared 6-10 1/4 at the Miami Invitational.
The women's only MAC champion in 2001, sophomore Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), has issues as well. She has not run at the same level she did last season, as her best 3,000 steeplechase clocking (10:38.22) ranks only fifth best in the MAC. Kremer, however, should be in the thick of things come the running of the steeplechase Friday at 5:40 p.m.
The RedHawk women's best hope for a conference champ may be sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), who is top five in three events: hammer, discus and shot put. A year ago, she brought home second-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes in those events, respectively.
Sophomore Erin Connolly (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) leads a strong contingent of hurdlers, which also includes freshman Katie Dyer (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and junior Kate Christoff (Lima, Ohio/Central Catholic). The trio owns the third-, eighth- and ninth-fastest 110 times in the MAC, respectively.
Also vying for conference crowns are sophomores Erika Harper (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford), the No. 4 seed in the 400, and Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), the fifth seed in the triple jump.
Competition gets underway at 1 p.m. on Thursday and 10:30 a.m. the final two days.
