CLEVELAND, Ohio - Miami's men's and women's track and field teams pulled off a rare feat Monday, April 22, sweeping the Mid-American Conference's Athlete of the week awards with field eventers that hail from the same high school. Sophomores Nick Somerville and Lauren Collins, both of Indianapolis's Lawrence Central High School, received men's and women's honors, respectively, for the first time in their careers.
Somerville blew away the competition in the long jump and triple jump at last Saturday's Southern Ohio Cup, at which the RedHawks finished second behind Cincinnati. His long jump mark of 24-11 1/4 beat the runner-up by more than 2-1/2 feet, broke his own school record by two inches and increased his MAC season-best mark by 9.5 inches. Likewise, his first-place triple jump mark of 48-11 3/4 was more than 2-1/2 feet farther than his next closest competitor. It also is the second-best jump this season in the MAC and moves him into ninth on the school's all-time list.
Collins was a triple-winner last Saturday, finishing first in the shot put (45-8 1/2), discus (149-5) and hammer (171-2). Her discus mark is the third best this season in the MAC. She won the shot by more than two-and-a-quarter feet, the discus by more than five feet and the hammer by a whopping 24 feet.
Somerville takes his talents to the prestigious Penn Relays, April 25-27, while Collins and her teammates travel to West Lafayette, Ind., on April 27 for the Purdue Invitational.
