CLEVELAND - Miami's women's track and field team was tabbed sixth in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, released Monday, March 25 by the league office, accumulating 79 points. The RedHawks are coming off a fourth-place finish at last year's conference meet.
The MAC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year and an all-America in the 3,000 steeplechase, sophomore Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) hopes to follow up her remarkable 2001 campaign. In five seasons at Miami, she has yet to be excluded from an all-MAC squad.
Among the other team members expected to contend for conference crowns are sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), the runner-up in the hammer throw last season, sophomore Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), who took fifth in the triple jump, senior Liz Lundgren (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and redshirt sophomore Kristen Fryburg (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), both of whom have scored in the 5,000 and 10,000, and sophomore Erin Connolly (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and junior Kate Christoff (Lima, Ohio/Central Catholic), who placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 hurdles last season.
Central Michigan occupies the top spot in the poll, pulling in 121 points. The Chippewas are followed by Eastern Michigan (117 points), Kent State (111), Ball State (109) and Toledo (96).
Miami next competes March 30 at the Cincinnati Invitational.
