OXFORD, Ohio - Following a seventh-place finish, which included no individual championships, last season, Miami's women's indoor track and field team looks to move up in the standings Feb. 22-23 at the 2002 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio, as well as place an athlete or two on the winner's podium.
No less than four team members have legitimate chances at an individual title, and a relay team also should contend for top honors as well.
Foremost among them is sophomore Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), who this season in the MAC has the fastest 3,000 time (9:39.20) and second-fastest clocking in the mile (4:54.78). Last year she placed runner-up in the 3,000 and fourth in the mile at the championships en route to second-team all-MAC honors.
Kremer is joined by junior Kylee Studer (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) and sophomores Jenny Korrison (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Erika Harper (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) on the distance medley relay team, which enters the meet with the fifth-fastest time (12:20.93) in the MAC.
Joining them on the track is redshirt sophomore Kristen Fryburg (Kettering, Ohio/Alter). She ranks third in the MAC in the 5,000, running a school-record 17:16.84 Feb. 15 at the All-Ohio Championships.
Heading up the field eventers is sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central). Her school-record 20-pound weight mark of 58-9 1/2 is the second best in the conference and also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships. Collins should also make a run at the shot put crown, as her farthest throw of 46-6 is fourth best in the MAC. It is likely she will dramatically improve upon her showing in 2001, when she came in fifth in the shot and 13th in the weight.
Rounding out the RedHawk contenders is sophomore Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), whose best mark this season in the triple jump, 40-0 1/4, puts her No. 3 in the MAC. As with Collins, Johnson looks to make a significant leap from her seventh-place finish a year ago.
Competition at Perry Field House begins both days at 10:30 a.m.
