MUNCIE, Ind. - Competing in a 15-athlete field at the Ball State Pentathlon, Miami University sophomore Katelyn Kelly was the top RedHawk finisher, placing fifth with a career-best point total of 3,320. Freshmen Nicki Mitchell and Alisha Jones also placed ninth (3,144 points) and 12th (3,009 points), respectively, for Miami in their first collegiate pentathlons.

Kelly, the ninth-place pentathlon finisher at last season's Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, upped her career-best score from 3,279 to 3,320 with her performance Saturday in Muncie. Kelly clocked in at 9.70 in the 60-meter hurdles and 2:34.46 in the 800 meters, and she added a height of 5-6 in the high jump and a distance of 16-5 in the long jump. Kelly additionally threw the shot put 32-5 1/2. Her best event of the meet was the high jump where she tied for second.

In their first pentathlons at the college level, Mitchell and Jones both finished with over 3,000 points, with Mitchell placing in the top 10. Mitchell's top event was the high jump where she cleared 5-4 1/2 and tied for fifth place. Mitchell also went 16-2 1/2 in the long jump, threw 31-2 in the shot put, ran a 10.14 in the 60-meter hurdles and clocked in at 2:33.75 in the 800 meters.

Jones' top event of the pentathlon was the 60-meter hurdles (9.65) where she finished seventh. Jones also clocked in at 2:44.06 in the 800 meters, cleared 4-9 1/2 in the high jump, went 15-6 1/4 in the long jump and threw the shot put 38-1/4.

 

 

Ashley Wilhelm, who competed unattached, won the pentathlon with a first-place score of 3,783.

Miami is now off from indoor track and field competition until Jan.13 when it travels to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Bowling Green and Western Michigan Triangular meet.
