Miami's women's indoor track and field team opened their season this weekend in the two-day Golden Flash Gala at Kent State University on Friday night and Saturday. Junior Jenny Korrison (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) led the RedHawks with her first-place finish in the 1000-meter run.
The Red and White began their 2002-03 campaign against the likes of Akron, Ashland, Buffalo, Dayton, Florida, Ohio, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Youngstown State. Although Korrison brought home Miami's lone first-place finish when she crossed the finish line in 2:55.41, many RedHawks started the season off strong.
Senior Erika Harper (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.39 behind Faith Rein from the University of Florida.
Sophomore Meredith Magsig (Elmore, Ohio/Woodmore) placed fifth in her first collegiate track and field meet in the one-mile run after running in 5:16.43.
Senior Kylee Studer (Edgerton, OH/Edgerton) continued her strong final year when she ran 10:10.56 for a third-place finish in the 3000-meter run. Junior Kristin Wrede (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) placed fifth with a time of 10:29.30. Studer earned second-team all-MAC in cross country this fall.
The RedHawks continued their strong performances when the Miami 4X400 Relay Team placed fourth with a time of 3:56.70.
Junior Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) placed fourth in the triple jump when she jumped 11.94 meters to give the RedHawks their final top-five finisher.
After taking time off for finals week and the mid-semester break, the RedHawks will be back in action at the University of Cincinnati on January 10.
