YPSILANTI, Mich. - Miami's women's track and field team dropped two places to ninth while the men scored their first points of the meet on the second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Sophomores Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) and Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and freshman Tabitha Schwartz (Concord, Va./Appomatox) placed for the women while sophomore Charles Davis (Riverside, Ohio/Walter E. Stebbins) took sixth in the decathlon for the second straight year.

The women have amassed 16 points, the men three.

Colllins improved on last year's fifth-place finish in the shot put by coming in third this time around, with a heave of 46-5 1/4.

The 2001 MAC champion and an All-America in the 3,000 steeplechase, Kremer was unable to duplicate last year's performance in the event but still managed a fifth-place finish, touring the oval in 10:36.66.

In the pole vault, Schwartz cleared 11-0 3/4, putting her sixth overall and first among freshman participants.

Also for the women, freshman Katie Dyer (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and sophomore Erin Connolly (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) qualified for the finals of the 100 hurdles, both running 14.39 in the preliminaries.

Davis totaled 6,324 points, improving on his 2001 total of 6,219. His best finishes on the day were a third in the 110 hurdles (15.37) and a fourth in the javelin (158-5).

Several men qualified for Sunday's finals, foremost among them junior Javin Tucker (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison), who had the top 400 hurdles time on Saturday, finishing in 53.22. Classmate Ed Morgan (Bloomington, Ind/Bloomington South) posted the second-fastest 800 clocking, crossing the finish line in 1:51.42.

Squeaking into the finals were junior DeLeon Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and freshman David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South). Johnson eighth and final runner to make it in the 400, in which he ran a 48.30, while Mitchell's time of 3:52.07 in the 1,500 made him the second-to-last qualifying runner.

Competition on the final day begins at 10:30 a.m. On the men's side, Eastern Michigan holds a 47-37 advantage over Western Michigan and Central Michigan. The Chippewa women have a slim 40-39 lead over Ball State entering Day Three.
