BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) broke the 15-year-old school shot put record, posting a mark of 48-2 3/4 on her third throw Saturday, May 11 at the Billy Hayes Invitational, en route to being the only RedHawk to win an event at the meet. The previous standard of 47-8 was set by Brenda Reed in 1987.

Collins' record-breaking throw is the second-best mark this season in the Mid-American Conference. She also placed runner-up in the discus with a toss of 151-0.

The only other second-place finisher for Miami on the day was sophomore Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), in the triple jump, with a season-best mark of 39-8.

Also in the field, sophomore Ally Sisler (Marion, Ohio/Pleasant) took fifth in the javelin (122-4).

On the track, sophomore Erika Harper (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) came in fifth in the 400 (56.18), while sophomore Erin Connolly (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), freshman Katie Dyer (Merrillville, Ohio/Merrillville) and junior Kate Christoff (Lima, Ohio/Central Catholic) placed sixth (14.24), seventh (14.49) and eighth (14.52), respectively, in the 100 hurdles. Connolly's clocking is the third fastest in the conference.

The 4x400 relay team of freshman Rasheda Malcolm (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken), Dyer, Harper and sophomore Jennifer Caldwell (Sabina, Ohio/East Clinton) finished third in recording a season-best time of 3:51.63.

The best finish for the men was second place, brought home by the 4x400 relay team of junior DeLeon Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy), junior Javin Tucker (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison), senior David Bonner (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Broadview-Brecksville) and junior Ed Morgan (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South).

The top individuals were Tucker, who claimed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.42, and freshman Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), who finished third in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-7 1/2.

Other fine performances include Morgan taking fourth (1:50.87) in the 800; senior Robert Frazier (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) fourth (165-0) in the discus; Johnson fifth (48.22) in the 400; sophomores Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton/Tennessee) fifth (3:53.50) and sixth (3:55.73), respectively, in the 1,500; and freshman Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) seventh (8:38.78) in the 3,000.

Both teams head off to Ypsilanti, Mich. Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19 for the MAC Championships. Competition begins 1 p.m. Thursday and 10:30 a.m. the final two days. The women are coming off a fourth-place finish in 2001 while the men placed seventh a year ago.
