OXFORD, Ohio - Despite winning nearly half of the events, Miami's men's and women's track and field teams finished second to Cincinnati at the fourth annual Southern Ohio Cup on Saturday, April 20 at George Rider Track and Field Complex. The RedHawks totaled 289 points, just behind the Bearcats' 295 and well ahead of Ohio's 221.

The meet champion is determined by adding both the men's and women's team scores.

The men claimed the top spot in 10 of 19 events. The most impressive peroformance was turned in by sophomore Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), who, in winning the long jump, broke his own school record by two inches with a mark of 24-11 1/4. It is the longest jump this season in the Mid-American Conference by more than one-and-a-quarter feet.

He also took first in the triple jump with a leap of 48-11 3/4, which rates second this year in the MAC and puts him in ninth on the school's all-time list.

Junior Ed Morgan (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) remained undefeated in the 800 this season, winning in a time of 1:50.08. Junior Bob Muhn (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) won the javelin with a hurl of 187-1, which is the third-best mark in the MAC and which improves his eighth-best mark in school history by seven inches.

Other winners for the men include junior DeLeon Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) in the 400 (47.75), sophomore Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) in the 1,500 (3:53.14), freshman Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) in the 5,000 (14:46.15), sophomore Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton/Tennessee) in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:21.42), senior Robert Frazier (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) in the discus (160-5) and the 4x400 team of Johnson, junior Javin Tucker (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison), senior Dave Bonner (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview) and Morgan, which crossed the finish line in 3:12.96.

Also of note, by clearing 6-10 1/4 in the high jump, freshman Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) qualified for the U.S. Junior National Championships.

On the women's side, sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind/Lawrence Central) won all three events she entered, the shot put, discus and hammer. Her discus mark of 149-5 is the third best this season in the conference.

Sophomore All-American Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) made her long-awaited debut this spring and performed quite well, winning the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:48.77, which rates as the third-fastest clocking this spring in the MAC, and placing third in the 1,500 (4:42.32).

Also coming in first for the women were freshman Tabitha Schwartz (Concord, Va./Appomatox), who moved into a tie for second on the school's all-time pole vault list by clearing 11-0 1/4, sophomore Bernitta Johnson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) in the triple jump (37-10 1/2) and sophomore Ally Sisler (Marion, Ohio/Pleasant) in the javelin (128-4).

The women compete at the Purdue Invitational Saturday, April 27, while selected members of the men's team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., April 25-27 for the prestigious Penn Relays.
