CINCINNATI - Several throwers on the Miami University women’s track and field team began their 2010 outdoor season Saturday at the Early Bird Relays, hosted by the University of Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium. The rest of the RedHawks start outdoor competition next weekend.

Sophomore Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) placed second in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 14.12m, which ranks her fourth on Miami’s all-time performers list, while freshman Brittany Wilson-Farley (Harrison, Ohio) took fourth with a toss of 13.20m. Roberts also took third in the discus (41.23m) while fellow sophomore Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) was right behind in fourth with a throw of 39.94m.

Gable, meanwhile, was Miami’s top finisher in the hammer throw, claiming third with a personal-best toss of 50.81, which places her fourth among all-time RedHawk performers. In the javelin, junior Alexia DeWitz (Greenwood, Ind.) finished in fifth place with a throw of 33.28m to lead all ’Hawks.

“I think it was a good start for the season and it’s something we can really build off of,” said throws coach Mark Rodriguez of the meet.

Despite competing in just the four throwing events, Miami still totaled 29 points to place 10th in the team standings out of 17 teams. Dayton won the meet with 112.5 points while the host Bearcats took second.

The entire Miami women’s track and field team will be in action Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27 at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold meet in Nashville, Tenn.
