SOUTH BEND, Ind. -
For the second straight weekend, the Miami University women's track and field team saw a school record fall, as redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson ran a 16:40.13 in the 5000m run Friday night at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The RedHawks faced their toughest competition of the season, competing against schools such as Ohio State, Michigan, Louisville, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan State, Purdue, Alabama, Missouri, the host Irish and MAC foes Kent State, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, and Western Michigan.
Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) shattered Andrea Kremer's 5K indoor mark of 16:48.37, which she set in 2004, while earning a NCAA provisional mark in the event and taking second in the race behind Indiana's Sarah Pease. Last week at the Indiana Relays, junior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) set the school record in the mile and also earned a provisional qualifying time.
Senior Laura Neufarth (Centerville, Ohio) ran in the 5000m as well, as she placed 14th in 17:40.50.
In the field events, senior Nicki Mitchell (Lake Forest, Ill.) took 12th in the long jump with a leap of 18-7.75 (5.68m), which is Miami's second-best jump of the season, while sophomore Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) was Miami's top finisher in the weight throw, placing 33rd with a heave of 47-9.75 (14.57m).
The RedHawks continue competing at the Meyo Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m. with the 3000m run. The meet concludes at approximately 4:25 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
