FINDLAY, Ohio/INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two school marks fell last Friday at the Findlay Classic as sophomore Lauren Collins (Indianapolis, Ind/Lawrence Central) broke her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw and junior Brienne Wade (Papillon, Neb./LaVista) and freshman Tabitha Schwartz (Concord, Va./Appomatox) set a new standard in the pole vault.
The whole team was supposed to compete at the Smith-Barney Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., but because of issues with some of the facilities, the throwers, pentathletes and vaulters performed at Findlay on Friday, while the runners remained at Butler University for the meet on Saturday.
Collins unleashed a toss of 58-9 1/2, shattering the previous record of 54-5 1/2, which she set last year against Ball State. Her mark also met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard of 58-1, making her Miami's first female field eventer to accomplish that feat in any event. Though it only placed her third in the competition, Collins' record-breaking throw is the longest this season in the Mid-American Conference. Proving she is not a one-trick pony, Collins also took second in the shot put with a mark of 45-5.
Also in the weight throw, senior tri-captain Marie Mokosso (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) became the third person in school history to break the 50-foot barrier with a hurl of 50-1/2, which landed her in fourth.
Schwartz, who set the school record in the pole vault Jan. 11 at the Cincinnati Quad with a height of 10-6, broke that mark at Findlay, where she went 11-0 and finished first. Wade also cleared 11-0 but placed third because she missed one of her attempts at 10-0.
Other winners for the RedHawks include sophomore Jennifer Caldwell (Sabina, Ohio/East Clinton), in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.98, and sophomore Catie Hollinger (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green), in the pentathlon with 3,243 points. Both figures represent personal bests.
