Entering his first year with the Miami women's track and field team, Brian Etelman joined the RedHawks' coaching staff in September of 2011. He serves as Miami's sprints, hurdles and jumps coach.
Etelman came to Miami from the University of Central Missouri, where he served as an assistant coach during the 2010-11 season, working with both UCM's men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and 800m runners. While at Central Missouri, he guided multiple athletes to Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships as well as helping several performers earn all-region honors.
"One of the things that really impress me about Brian is even though he hasn't been coaching very long, he comes from two very different programs, has been around a lot of high-level coaches, and has learned a great deal. He has had some great mentors and has taken different styles of coaching and developed his own style, something not many young coaches are ready to do," head coach Kelly Phillips said upon hiring Etelman. "We are really excited to see what he can do with his event areas. He has a really competitive edge about him and wants to win and I love that."
During the 2008-09 season, Etelman was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, instructing men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. While working with the Bulldogs, he oversaw several athletes who earned All-America honors and SEC championships and also coached Olympic trials finalists.
While competing at Georgia, Etelman ran in the 100m, 200m and 400m dashes while posting four all-time top-10 marks for the Bulldogs. He also garnered All-America honors in 2007 in the 4x400m relay, was an All-East Region recipient in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays and earned a berth in the 200m finals at the SEC Championships.
A native of Marietta, Ga., Etelman earned his bachelor's degree in history from Georgia in 2007. He is a certified USATF Level I coach.
