WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Miami won two of three doubles matches and split six singles matches against Louisville Friday on the opening day of the Purdue Invitational.
The fall schedule is played in an individual format, but under the spring scoring rules, the Redhawks would have defeated the Cardinals by a 4-3 count.
The doubles pair of Megan Martzolf (Indianapolis) and Stephanie Danesis (Akron) turned in the most impressive performances, combining for an 8-2 win together in the No. 1 Flight, then each winning a singles match. Danesis won 6-4, 6-3 over Natalia Baez in No. 1 singles, while Martzolf topped Jo-Ann Van Aerde 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
Riekie Honiball (Windhoek, NAMIBIA) and Brintney Larson (Peachtree City, Ga.) picked up an 8-3 win in the No. 2 doubles flight. Honiball later took a 6-1, 6-4 decision from Bianca Gorbea in No. 4 singles.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
