EAST LANSING, Mich.--Miami University's women's tennis team had a strong showing at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional.

"We got some good wins over strong competition this weekend, which is always encouraging," said head coach Howard Joffe. "While it was a very good weekend for us, we still have a ways to go. This weekend was a good measuring stick for where we are and what we need to do to keep improving."

Sophomore Anastasia Dracheva advanced to the second round of the singles main draw, while sophomore Megan Martzolf battled through the qualifying draw to earn a spot in the singles main draw.

Dracheva pulled out an exciting 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Illinois' Megan Fudge in the opening round of the main draw to advance in the bracket. Illinois' Chelcie Abajian ended Dracheva's run in the main draw by defeating her in the second round 7-5, 6-3.

Martzolf defeated Ohio State's Julie Voss, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of qualifying and went on to defeat Illinois' Christine Stromberg 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the second round. With a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 win over Michigan State's Ana Milosavljevic, Martzolf advanced from qualifying to the singles main draw where she suffered a suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Western Michigan's Kerstin Pahl in the first round of main-draw competition

Also in the main draw, Northwestern's Keri Robison topped freshman Stephanie Danesis 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the first round of main-draw action. Danesis came back with a 6-2, 1-6 (10-5) win over Notre Dame's Katie Potts in the consolation bracket.

"Anastasia picked up a win over Illinois' No. 1 player, and Megan defeated players from Ohio State, Illinois and Michigan State. Stephanie (Danesis) picked up a good win in the consolation bracket against a player from Notre Dame. Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for us," added Joffe.

Freshman Riekie Honiball and junior Brintney Larson each won their first-round matches in the qualifying draw. Honiball downed Cleveland State's Charlotte Gibbons 6-1, 6-1, while Larson defeated IPFW's Amy Recht 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Indiana State's Sofya Lifanova defeated Honiball in the second round, 6-4, 7-6 (3), while Illinois' Chelcie Abajian defeated Larson in the second round, 6-1, 6-2.

In the doubles main draw, Danesis and Martzolf won their opening round match, posting an 8-2 win over Drake's Sarah Plowman and Veronika Leszayova. Danesis and Martzolf suffered an 8-5 loss to DePaul's Gia McKnight and Selma Salkovic in the second round.

Honiball and Larson lost their opening round doubles main draw match to Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose, 8-3.

The RedHawks return to action at the Purdue Invitational, Nov. 7-9.
