MIDLAND, Texas--Playing amongst an extremely competitive field at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, four RedHawk women's tennis players -- Anastasia Dracheva, Megan Martzolf, Stephanie Danesis and Reikie Honiball -- had a very successful weekend of competition according to head coach Howard Joffe.
"It was a very successful weekend," said Joffe. "Megan, Anastasia and Stephanie all defeated players who were either ranked nationally as individuals or are competing on nationally-ranked teams."
The field consisted of players from programs such as Baylor, Nebraska Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, Abilene Christian, Pepperdine, UCLA and UTEP.
Dracheva and Danesis advanced to the third round, the final 16, in singles action, while Martzolf advanced to the second round and Honiball competed in the first round in singles.
In doubles action, Martzolf teamed up with Danesis and Dracheva teamed up with Honiball. Both RedHawk doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals at the Midland Invitational.
"I thought it was a very good weekend for us," said Joffe. "Anastasia defeated a player from Baylor, who was a national semifinalist last year. Stephanie defeated a player from Rice, and Megan defeated a player who advanced to the round of 16 individually at the NCAA Tournament last year."
The RedHawks return to action at the ITA Regionals in East Lansing, Mich., Oct. 23-27.
