WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--Sophomore Anastasia Dracheva and Megan Martzolf along with freshman Stephanie Danesis represented Miami University's women's tennis program with strong performances among a field loaded with some of the nation's top players at the 16th Annual William & Mary Invitational.
Danesis won Flight B Singles. In her opening match, Danesis came back from a 6-3 loss in the first set against Arkansas' Kate Lukomaskaya to post a 6-3, 10-8 wins to advance in the winner's bracket.
Danesis went on to best Boston College's Dasha Cherkasov 6-1, 6-4 before topping Ohio State's Julie Blackmore 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the championship match. Like her opening match, Danesis dropped the first set 3-6 against Ohio State's Kelsey Haviland before rallying for 6-4, 7-5 wins to seize the Flight B Singles bracket.
Martzolf won the Flight D Singles consolation bracket. After a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Arkansas' Nanar Airapetian in the opening match, Martzolf cruised through the consolation bracket. She dominated the rest of the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Elon's Melssa Wolf, a 6-3, 6-3 win against William & Mary's Carmen Pop, before posting a 6-2, 6-2 win against Winthrop's Sandra Herrera in the consolation final.
Dracheva competed in Flight A Singles, falling in her first match to 87th-ranked Ragini Acharya (William & Mary) 6-3, 6-3. She went on to defeat Winthrop's Elizaveta Zaytseva 3-6, 7-5, 10-2, before Miami's (Fla.) 49th-ranked Michaela Kissell topped Dracheva 6-1, 6-4. In the consolation of Fight A Singles, Memphis' Ashley Murdock edged Dracheva 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles action, Danesis and Martzolf teamed up to post an 8-5 win in the opening match of Flight A Doubles against Boston College's Gajic and Sullivan. The duo then suffered an 8-6 loss to William & Mary's Acharya and Zoricic in the next match and an 8-3 loss to Eichkorn and Waible of Miami (Fla.).
