Final Stats

MADISON, Wis. -- Junior Megan Martzolf continued her hot start to the 2010 spring season, taking a 10th straight match, but it wasn't enough as Wisconsin handed the RedHawks a 5-2 loss Sunday afternoon.

Wisconsin (5-9) gained the doubles after three tightly-contested matches. The teams split at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles spots, leaving the point up to the players at No. 2. The Badger duo held the lead most of the match but Cara Wald and Riekie Honiball were able to creep back to tie at five. Each team won on its next serve, but Wisconsin was able to take the point 8-6.

The Badgers carried the momentum into singles play where they earned two quick wins in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots. Wald, playing at No. 5 for just the second time this season fell, 6-3, 6-0 victory while Sydnee Bridger lost 6-1, 6-3 at. No. 6.

Down 3-0, Miami picked up back-to-back wins to close the gap. Martzolf posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 3, then Anastasia Dracheva won 6-1, 6-2 in the top flight. Wisconsin clinched the match when Stephanie Danesis fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.

Although the final outcome was already decided, the No. 4 singles tie was the most entertaining of the day. Miami's Honiball was able to jump out to a 6-0 first-set win over Jessica Seyferth, but the Badger was able to rally 6-1, 6-2 to make the final score 5-2.

Miami returns to action Sunday with a doubleheader of sorts. The RedHawks play Georgia State in a neutral site match in the morning before challenging host UNC-Wilmington in the afternoon.
