HAMILTON, Ohio--Miami University's women's tennis team (5-5; 0-0 MAC) entered a two-week layoff on a high note Saturday afternoon at Riverside Racquet Club, battling past Murray State University, 5-2, in a competitive match that included four three-set singles matches.
The RedHawks seized the early momentum by capturing two of three doubles matches and the all-important doubles point, getting wins from seniors Remy Swain and Maura Trauernicht, 8-5, at second doubles and sophomore Victoria Pulido and Leda Pesatova, 8-2, at third doubles. The duo of Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova nearly completed the doubles sweep but fell 7-5 in the tiebreaker to drop an 8-7 decision to the Murray State duo of Anna and Rachael Lask.
Straight set wins by Swain and Pulido and sixth and fifth singles, respectively, put Miami on the verge of victory, but the RedHawks would need a three-set win from sophomore Kelly Douple over previously unbeaten Anne Pennington at fourth singles to secure the victory. Lomidze and Pesatova both absorbed difficult three-set losses at first and second singles, respectively, before Jirouskova rounded out the match with a marathon 6-3, 5-7, 12-10 win at third singles.
Miami enters a two-week layoff and returns to action on March 18 when it hosts Xavier University in its final non-conference match before the start of league play.
