HAMILTON, Ohio -- No. 71 Miami continued its dominance of local rivals Friday with a 6-1 victory over Cincinnati in a women's tennis match played indoors at the Riverside Racquet Club. The RedHawks swept doubles action for the first point, then took five of six matches in singles play.

Miami (2-1) surrendered just eight games in the three doubles matches to open a 1-0 lead. Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald started things off with an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 position before Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf sealed the point by winning No. 1 by the same score. Anastasia Dracheva and Brintney Larson completed the sweep with an 8-2 triumph at No. 2.

In singles play, Wald upped the margin to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of her opponent at No. 6, while Martzolf dropped just one game in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot.The RedHawks clinched the match when Riekie Honiball completed a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.

The rout continued with two more Miami wins. At No. 1, Anastasia Dracheva earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Stephanie Danesis eeked out a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at the No. 2 position, putting the RedHawks up 6-0.

Cincinnati (0-2) got on the scoreboard in the final match when Ksenia Slynko rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Brintney Larson at No. 4.

"This was another well-played match for us," Interim Head Coach Ricky Rosas said. "But its early on and we need to keep getting better. We have to improve this week as we prepare for our first road trip of the season."

 

 

After three straight home dates, Miami heads to Huntington, W. Va. this weekend for a pair of matches. The RedHawks face West Virginia on Saturday at 10 a.m., then face former Mid-American Conference rival Marshall on Sunday at noon.
