OXFORD, Ohio--The Miami University senior synchronized skating team will be traveling to Fraser, Mich., this Saturday to take part in the 25th Mid-America Championships at the Great Lakes Sports City. The Mid-America is the team's last warm-up event before competing at the Mid-Western Championships on Jan. 26-29 where they qualify for the United States National Championships. The Mid-America Championships are the largest non-qualifying synchronized skating competition in the United States with over 110 teams attending each year.

The Miami senior team will only be performing its short program this weekend. This is the third year in a row the team has competed at the Mid-American Championships and finished second overall last season.

"Our team got off to a fast start before the holiday break, taking first at the Dr. Porter Classic and now we can't let down," head coach Vicki Korn said. "We were the only team at the Dr. Porter Classic to attain all of our points. The goal this weekend is to maintain and improve. The competition will be tough, just like it was back in December, as we will be taking on three of the top four Canadian teams."

After the Mid-Western Championship qualifying event, the team will head overseas to Milan, Italy on Feb. 8-13 to compete against some of the world's best at the Spring Cup International. The United States National Championships will be held in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Feb. 22-26. Miami finished second in the U.S. Nationals last year and qualified for the ISU World Championships where it placed seventh overall, the highest finish in school history.
