LOWELL, Mass. - The Miami University Junior Synchronized Skating Team will make its first appearance of the new year this weekend at The Colonial Classic and World Junior Qualifier at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. The team, competing in just its second event since being re-formed this year, will be taking on 10 other teams from the United States, including many teams from the Dr. Porter Classic. Miami finished third overall at the Dr. Porter behind two Canadian teams.
"This will be an exciting weekend for the junior team," said head coach Vicki Korn. "It is our first chance to find out who we are and where we stand. This team has a great deal of talent and had a great opening performance at the Dr. Porter Classic. We are looking for improvement and a great pair of performances over the weekend."
The RedHawks are looking to be selected as one of the U.S. teams who will travel to Nottingham, Great Britain on March 9-10 for the World Challenge Cup. The last time Miami competed in the World Challenge was in 1998-99 as it finished sixth.
Miami's program, now in its 10th year as a varsity sport, is coached by 23rd-year veteran head coach Vicki Korn and assistant coaches Carla DeGirolamo (fourth year) and Heather Paige-Himes (third year). Last season, the senior and collegiate teams swept the U.S. National Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. The senior team went on to capture a fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic - equaling the highest finish ever for a U.S. team at the competition.
