Vicki Korn enters her 25th season as head coach of the nation's first collegiate senior-level synchronized skating program.
Korn, who served as Miami's skating director from 1984- 2001, began coaching the synchronized skating program at the club-level in 1984. Prior to the program achieving varsity status, Korn led the team to a national championship at the junior level in 1993 and two bronze medals at the senior level (1994-95).
Since the program was upgraded to a varsity sport for the 1995-96 season, Korn has guided Miami's senior-level synchronized skating team to a U.S. National Championship in 1999 and 2006 and World Championship appearances in seven of the last eight years. Miami's squad has finished in the top three nationally at the senior level in 12 of the 14 seasons since it attained varsity status.
In 2006-07, the senior team broke new ground as it earned the first ever medal for the United States at the World Championships. The RedHawks captured the silver medal at the event held in London, Ontario. In addition, the senior team skaters were the first US synchronized team to compete in the World University Games conducted in Torino, Italy. The squad skated to a fourth-place finish in this inaugural event.
For these accomplishments, Korn was honored as both the 2007 PSA/US Figure Skating Coach of the Year and the 2007 PSA Synchronized Skating Coach of the Year. Prior, Korn was honored in 1997 and 1999 by the PSA as Synchronized Skating Coach of the Year following the spectacular season in which Miami captured its first national championship in any team sport.
A Chicago-area native, Korn has been active at the national and regional levels in figure skating. She has served on the board of directors of both the United States Figure Skating Association and the Ice Skating Institute.
During a stint as the USFSA Collegiate Chairperson, Korn was instrumental in forming the Midwest Collegiate Figure Skating Conference.
Korn has a daughter, Ashley, a junior at Miami and a three-year member of the synchronized skating program.
