OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's swimming and diving team (3-2, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) won the meet's first six events and cruised to a 187-111 victory over Akron (0-2, 0-2 MAC) Saturday at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.

Freshman Leah Thornton and juniors Megan Brunn and Kelsey Vehr led the RedHawks, winning five individual events combined. Overall, Miami won 11 out of 16 events.

Thornton won the 100-yard backstroke (56.87) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.74), her second and third individual wins of the weekend. She was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay team and finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:10.25).

Brunn was the winner in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.90) and the 200-yard IM (2:09.21).

Vehr, the 2009 MAC champion in 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, continued her dominance in the breaststroke events this season, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.89). It was her fifth win in a breaststroke event this season. She was also a member of the first-place 400-yard medley team.

The Red and White 400-yard medley relay team of Thornton, Vehr, senior Allison Way and freshman Katie Arlinghaus opened the meet with a convincing win, touching the wall more than two seconds ahead of the visiting Zips to take the early lead.

The RedHawks opened up a big lead in the meet's second event, the 1650-yard freestyle thanks to redshirt freshman Claire Dickmann's first collegiate victory. Dickmann led the race from start to finish, clocking in at 17:28.54. She also earned a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.08).

Freshman Bekka Westrick helped extend the lead, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.33). Later, in the 100-yard freestyle she finished a close second with a time of 52.91.

Sophomore Kelsey Mallon won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.92), her second win of the year in the event.

In the one-meter diving, senior Kelsey Anagnos picked up her first win of the season with a score of 263.09. She also finished second in the three-meter (246.90) to freshman teammate Corrine Bangs (271.13).

Next up for head coach Dave Jennings's RedHawks is a MAC road trip Nov. 6-7 against Toledo and Bowling Green.
